What's MS

Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, means “many scars.” The disease has this name because MS causes scars on the nerves in the body. The brain sends messages through the nerves to other parts of the body, but when scars form, they slow or stop these messages. As a result, some people with MS may have a hard time moving their arms and legs or seeing and speaking clearly.

Most people who have MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, and the disease affects each person differently. Right now there is no cure for MS, but there are medicines that help people who have the disease.

MS READaTHON raises money to help people with MS. The National MS Society assists people by providing information about MS, distributing medical supplies, providing transportation and funding researchers who are trying to find new treatments and a cure for the disease.
